A young family with a 100 year old house trapped in the middle of the City of Toronto. The stress of work, children, and life in a busy urban environment had wore them down and they were desperate for a break.A proposal to create a “hotel retreat” experience was brought up. The main objective to create an environment functionally and stylistically disconnected from the rest of their house where they could go to recharge. The wife in particular wanted a luxurious bathroom to be fitted within the already small layout. The unfinished basement required mayor work, including underpinning the existing structure in order to excavate to increase the final height of thebasement.Client’s wanted the space to look and feel as luxurious as possible, but were limited by a strict budget. The solution was to repurpose several cabinetry collections from IKEA and finishing them up with minimal custom millwork, in order to achieve a final product that looks entirely custom at a fraction of the typical cost.
